Care instructions for backpacks and bags

Care Tips for Backpacks & Bags – Keep Your Gear Ready for Any Adventure
Whether for school, skating, everyday life, or on the go: backpacks and bags are daily companions that have to withstand a lot. To keep your favorite item functional, clean, and visually appealing for a long time, a little care goes a long way. Here’s how to properly clean, store, and maintain your backpacks and bags.

1. Empty and Shake Out Regularly

Crumbs, dust, sand, or small stones often collect unnoticed in corners. That’s why you should:

  • Empty the bag completely on a regular basis
  • Open all compartments and shake the backpack out thoroughly
  • Use a soft brush or handheld vacuum to help clean inside
  • Especially skate bags or outdoor backpacks tend to collect more residue than expected due to frequent outdoor use.
2. Clean the Surface – the Right Way

Most bags are made from durable materials like nylon, polyester, or canvas. These are easy to clean:

  • Wipe with a damp cloth
  • For heavier soiling: use a mild soapy solution or delicate detergent
  • Avoid harsh cleaning agents or bleach!

Tip: Stiff brushes or abrasive sponges can damage the material – instead, use soft cloths or sponges.

3. Washing – Only When Necessary

Many backpacks are not machine-washable, as zippers, straps, or coatings can get damaged.

If a more thorough cleaning is needed:

  • Wash the backpack by hand in lukewarm water
  • Treat removable parts (e.g. back padding) separately
  • Rinse well and let air dry (never on a heater or in a dryer!)
4. Proper Drying

Wet bags should always be dried upside down and open in a well-ventilated area – ideally in the shade.
This prevents:

  • Mold
  • Odors
  • Deformation due to heat
5. Take Care of Zippers & Buckles

The small parts need attention too:

  • Clean zippers occasionally with a dry cloth
  • If they get stuck, a little silicone spray or zipper wax can help
  • Regularly check buckles and clips for cracks or wear
6. Store in a Dry and Airy Place

Don’t store backpacks and bags compressed or in damp basements. Ideal storage:

  • In a dry location
  • Loosely filled (e.g. with paper) to help maintain shape
  • Protected from direct sunlight
Conclusion:

A Little Care Goes a Long Way
A well-maintained backpack not only looks better, but also lasts longer. Especially for active skaters and anyone who uses their bags daily, regular cleaning and care are definitely worth it.
