Care instructions for ice skates

How to Keep Your Ice Skate Blades Sharp & Rust-Free – Care Tips for Long-Lasting Skates
If you regularly hit the ice, you know: well-maintained blades make all the difference. Sharp, rust-free skate blades provide better control, improved technique, and of course, more fun on the ice. To keep your skates in top condition, we've put together the most important care tips for you.

1. After Skating: Dry Thoroughly
Condensation, ice residue, and meltwater quickly lead to rust – especially when skates are left in a warm car or a bag. That's why: after every use, wipe the blades with a dry, soft cloth before storing them.

2. Use the Right Blade Guards
To protect your blades during transport and storage, two types of guards are useful:

Hard blade guards: Perfect for walking off the ice (e.g., in the rink or parking lot). They protect the blades from damage caused by hard surfaces.

Soft fabric blade covers: Put on after drying to absorb any remaining moisture – protecting the edges from rust and scratches during transport or in your bag.

Important: Always remove hard guards after use, as moisture can accumulate underneath!

3. Have Your Blades Sharpened Regularly
Even with normal use, blades lose their sharpness over time. Dull blades make skating more difficult and unsafe. Our recommendation:

Have your blades professionally sharpened every 15–25 hours on the ice, or whenever you feel like your control in turns is fading.

If you often skate on natural ice, check the blades even more frequently.

4. Prevent Rust – Store Properly
Rust is a blade’s worst enemy. Here’s how to prevent it:

Don’t store skates in plastic bags or damp equipment bags.

Don’t leave them in the car or garage, especially overnight.

Store them at room temperature in a dry, well-ventilated place.

You can gently remove light rust spots with a sharpening rubber or very fine steel wool – but be careful: never damage the blade’s edge!

5. Hands Off the Edges
Avoid touching the blades with your hands. Sweat, skin oils, and dirt can damage the sensitive surface. If you do touch them: clean and dry them immediately afterward.

Conclusion: Blade Care Pays Off
With just a few simple steps, you can significantly extend the life of your skates – and get the most out of every skating session. Whether you're a beginner, recreational skater, or ambitious figure skater: well-maintained blades mean more fun, safety, and performance on the ice.
