Roller Derby – Rules, Basics, and Things to Know

Roller derby is an action-packed full-contact sport on roller skates, combining slow and high speeds, strategy, teamwork, and a healthy dose of determination. From the outside, a derby bout may look chaotic, but in reality it follows a clearly defined set of rules.

In roller derby, two teams compete against each other on an oval track. The goal is to score points by having one player — the so-called jammer — lap as many opposing players as possible. The opposing team tries to stop the jammer through smart blocking, tactical positioning, and physical engagement. Roller derby thrives on dynamics, fairness, and intense battles.

Originally popularized in the United States, roller derby has evolved into a strong global subculture. Particularly defining are its DIY mentality, flat hierarchies, diversity, and tight-knit community. Roller derby is not just a sport, but also an expression of self-confidence, empowerment, and solidarity.

Roller derby is usually played as flat track roller derby, meaning on a flat, oval track. A game consists of several short periods of play, known as jams. Each jam lasts a maximum of two minutes and begins with a simultaneous start of the players.

Each team has five players on the track at the same time:

  • one jammer (the point scorer)
  • four blockers, including one pivot (a key tactical role)

Roller derby is more than just a sport. It is loud, rebellious, inclusive, and incredibly motivating. Every player brings their own style, personality, and story onto the track. The mix of speed, tactics, body control, and team spirit creates an intense experience — for both participants and spectators.

Anyone who has experienced roller derby live or tried it themselves quickly understands why this sport captivates people all over the world. Adrenaline, unity, and the relentless will to get back up and keep rolling make roller derby truly unique.

Roller Derby Roller Skates

Roller Skates for Roller Derby

Roller Derby skates, also known as quad skates, are specifically designed for speed, agility, and tough physical contact. Compared to recreational, lifestyle, or dance skates, they are more robust, feature stiffer boots for direct power transfer, and are therefore significantly more responsive.

If you’re just getting started with Roller Derby, you can opt for an affordable Roller Derby skate, in which you’ll likely feel even more comfortable than in a pro model. Once you realize that Derby has completely hooked you and your progress starts to slow down, it’s time to upgrade to higher-quality boots.

Either way, in our range you’ll find the right Derby roller skate for every level.

Protective gear

Protective gear for Roller Derby

Roller Derby is a full-contact sport where players can collide at high speeds or take hard falls. That’s not the only reason why we recommend high-quality protective gear for Roller Derby – especially pads with a hard plastic cap – but also because feeling well protected gives you the confidence to push your limits and take game-deciding risks.

For Roller Derby, we recommend the following protective gear, especially products from brands like Ennui, 187 Killer Pads, TSG, or Triple Eight:

  • Helmet
  • Wrist guards
  • Elbow pads
  • Knee pads
  • Padded shorts
  • Upper body protection
  • Mouthguard
  • Shin guards (can be useful, but are not absolutely necessary)

With the right protective gear, you’ll be perfectly prepared – no matter which position you play on the track.

Accessories for Roller Derby

Toe guards, sweatbands, carrying straps, and more

With the right accessories, such as toe protectors (toe guards), you can protect your Derby boots from wear and tear and enjoy your skates for a long time.

Sweatbands and other accessories make your Derby experience more comfortable and enjoyable, allowing you to focus better on the track.

Brakes & toe stops

Brakes & toe stops for Roller Derby skates

Especially in Roller Derby, intact toe stops are essential and can make the difference between winning and losing. Unfortunately, they are also among the parts that wear out the fastest in Derby.

However, you’ll always find new and suitable toe stops for the rink in our shop. We offer toe stops in many different colors, thread lengths, and sizes, so there’s the right option for every position and playing style.

Large toe stops allow you, as a blocker, to stand more securely or come to a safe stop after a fast overtaking maneuver.

Off the track, for example at a roller disco, you can also install the right jam plugs and just let loose.
