In roller derby, two teams compete against each other on an oval track. The goal is to score points by having one player — the so-called jammer — lap as many opposing players as possible. Each team has five players on the track at the same time:
- one jammer (the point scorer)
- four blockers, including one pivot (a key tactical role)
